*Description: This is a beautiful West Germany beaded necklace with a large red glass pendant and matching red glass box clasp with two strands of Lucite faceted beads and filigree end caps from the 1950s. The necklace has five beaded tassels hanging from the large red glass pendant in matching beads from the necklace. The glass pendant is 1 3/8 Inches and the matching glass clasp is 5/8 Inch. The necklace is light in weight due to the beads being Lucite or molded plastic. The clasp is stamped West Germany. This would be a great addition to your vintage jewelry collection or make a great vintage gift!
After WWII, Germany was divided into four sectors: American, British, French, and Soviet. In 1946, there was a guarded border between West Germany and East Germany. Then in 1952, the border between the two was closed until it was reopened again in 1989. Due to the history, it is possible to date some of the jewelry made in Germany. Jewelry made before 1949 is marked GERMANY, but jewelry made after that time up until 1990, is marked WEST GERMANY. Jewelry made after 1990 is again marked GERMANY.
The most collectible marked W. Germany pieces are jewelry sets: pins and earrings, or necklaces and earrings made of elaborate filigree metal and decorated with tiny colorful beads and pearls.
